The idea that emotions interfere with rational thinking has been a dominant belief in Western philosophy and science for centuries. However, neuroscience has revealed a much more complex relationship between emotion and reason, one that shows emotions are not obstacles to rationality but essential components of decision-making.

One of the most well-known cases supporting this view is that of Phineas Gage, a 19th-century railroad worker who survived a severe brain injury that damaged parts of his prefrontal cortex-an area critical for emotional processing. After the accident, Gage's intellectual abilities, such as memory and language, remained largely intact. However, his personality changed drastically. He became impulsive, irresponsible, and unable to make consistent decisions in his personal and professional life. This case provided early evidence that emotional regulation is not separate from reason, but deeply intertwined with our capacity to make meaningful decisions.
Further evidence comes from neuroscientist Antonio Damasio's work with patients who, due to brain damage, lost the ability to experience emotions while retaining high cognitive function. These patients could articulate the logic behind choices, understand outcomes, and analyze probabilities. Yet, when faced with real-life decisions-like choosing a restaurant, planning a daily routine, or selecting between job offers-they struggled to commit. Without emotional input, every option seemed equally viable, leading to indecision or poor judgment. Damasio concluded that emotions act as a kind of filter or weighting system, helping individuals prioritize and choose between competing alternatives.
Emotions also help humans assess risk. Fear, for example, is crucial for avoiding dangerous situations. Without fear, a person may repeatedly engage in life-threatening behavior. Disgust helps avoid contamination, and guilt reinforces social norms. Even happiness plays a role by reinforcing behaviors that lead to well-being. In this sense, emotions provide a heuristic framework that speeds up decision-making and anchors choices to personal and social values.
Interestingly, artificial intelligence systems that attempt to mimic human decision-making are increasingly being designed with models that simulate emotional responses. This is because pure logic, in complex real-world situations, often leads to suboptimal or ethically questionable outcomes. Emotion, in humans, acts as a shortcut to moral reasoning and intuitive judgment, which is hard to replicate in machines.
From an evolutionary standpoint, the integration of emotion and reason makes sense. Emotions evolved to promote survival and social cohesion. A being that can assess threats, cooperate with others, form attachments, and regulate behavior based on experience is more likely to thrive. Reason alone, without emotional grounding, can be paralyzing or even dangerous.
In conclusion, a human completely devoid of emotions would likely struggle to make any sensible decision. Emotions are not just irrational impulses; they are foundational tools for navigating the complexities of life. They shape preferences, define values, and provide the motivation to act. Far from being the enemies of logic, emotions are the engines that drive it.
