The relationship between figs and wasps is one of the most fascinating examples of coevolution in the natural world. At the center of this intricate connection lies a surprising fact: some figs do contain wasps, or at least parts of them. But not all figs, and certainly not in the way you might think.
Figs are not actually fruits in the traditional sense. Botanically speaking, they are inverted flowers, called syconia. The inside of a fig is lined with tiny flowers, which require pollination to produce seeds. This is where fig wasps come in. For millions of years, fig trees and fig wasps have evolved together in a mutualistic relationship-each species of fig is typically pollinated by a specific species of fig wasp.

The process is unique. A female fig wasp enters a fig through a small opening called the ostiole. In doing so, she often loses her wings and antennae, becoming trapped inside. She then lays her eggs and pollinates the fig flowers with pollen she carried from the fig in which she was born. After laying eggs, the female dies inside the fig.
The eggs hatch into larvae, which mature into wasps. Male wasps, which are born without wings, mate with the females while still inside the fig and then dig escape tunnels for them. The females leave, carrying pollen from the fig, and the cycle begins anew in another fig.
However, not all figs are pollinated this way. Some commercial fig varieties, like the popular Calimyrna figs, require pollination, but others, such as many types of common figs (Ficus carica), have been bred to no longer rely on wasps. These varieties are parthenocarpic, meaning they develop without pollination and thus without wasps.
Even when wasps are involved, you don't need to worry about crunching into one. Figs produce an enzyme called ficin, which breaks down the wasp's body into proteins. By the time you eat the fig, any insect remnants have been fully digested by the plant.
From a scientific perspective, this interaction is a marvel of symbiosis. Both the fig and the wasp rely on each other to reproduce. Without the wasp, the fig can't create seeds; without the fig, the wasp can't reproduce. This one-to-one pollinator-plant relationship is rare in nature and is often studied in evolutionary biology as an example of obligate mutualism.
A curious twist in this story is that fig wasps are often incredibly tiny-just a few millimeters long. Many people imagine large, visible wasps inside figs, but in reality, they are hardly noticeable. Furthermore, there are over 750 species of fig trees worldwide, each with its own wasp species adapted to its unique structure and climate.
This partnership has existed for more than 80 million years, making it one of the oldest plant-pollinator relationships known. Fossil records suggest that fig-wasp coevolution dates back to the time of the dinosaurs.
So, to answer the question: some figs contain wasps, but not all. And even when they do, you're unlikely to see or taste them. Instead, you're enjoying the end result of an extraordinary evolutionary partnership that has stood the test of time.
