Submarines operate in an environment where GPS signals cannot reach due to the high density of seawater, which blocks the radio waves used by satellites. This presents a significant challenge for navigation, especially when traveling deep underwater for extended periods. So, how do submarines know where they are without GPS?

The key lies in a system known as inertial navigation. This method does not rely on external signals but instead uses internal sensors to calculate the vessel's position, velocity, and orientation over time. The system is built around a set of accelerometers and gyroscopes mounted on a stable platform within the submarine. These instruments measure acceleration and rotational movement. By integrating this data over time, the submarine can estimate its current position based on its last known location.
However, inertial navigation systems (INS) are not perfect. They are subject to drift-small errors in measurement that accumulate over time. Even with very precise instruments, a submarine's position can become uncertain by several kilometers after just a few days. To mitigate this, submarines occasionally surface or come close to the surface to recalibrate their position using GPS or celestial navigation, when possible.
Another tool submarines use is Doppler Velocity Logs (DVL). These devices send out sound waves towards the ocean floor and measure the frequency shift in the returned signal to determine the speed and direction of travel. When combined with inertial navigation, this helps to reduce drift and improve positional accuracy.
In shallower waters, submarines might also rely on terrain contour matching. This involves comparing sonar readings of the ocean floor with preloaded digital maps. By matching the contours of the sea bottom to known geographical data, the submarine can estimate its position much more accurately.
Moreover, some advanced submarines employ underwater acoustic positioning systems, which use a network of transponders on the sea floor. These systems are more common in scientific or commercial settings than in military ones, as they require a fixed infrastructure that may compromise stealth.
Historically, celestial navigation was used when submarines surfaced at night. Navigators would take star sightings with sextants, similar to methods used by ancient sailors. While mostly obsolete today, it's a testament to the ingenuity required before satellite navigation existed.
A fun fact: even marine animals such as whales and sea turtles use natural methods for underwater navigation, including Earth's magnetic field, sun position, and ocean currents. Similarly, some experimental submarine systems explore using magnetometers to read variations in Earth's magnetic field for orientation.
In summary, submarines navigate without GPS by using a combination of inertial navigation systems, Doppler velocity measurements, sonar mapping, and occasionally surfacing for recalibration. These technologies together allow them to maintain relatively accurate positioning even during long underwater missions.
