These modifications create microscopic structures known as nanogratings. The way these nanogratings interact with light-depending on their orientation and strength-can be read to decode the stored data. A single 5D glass disk can store up to 500 terabytes, withstand temperatures up to 1000°C, and remain stable for up to 13.8 billion years under ambient conditions.

The glass used is typically silica-based, an extremely durable and transparent material. Data is written in three layers at different depths, and within each layer, information is encoded by modulating the laser's polarization and intensity, creating tiny 3D dots-each about the size of a few hundred nanometers.

Reading the data requires a polarizing optical microscope and specialized software to interpret the polarization state and intensity. Though this makes it more suited for archival purposes than everyday use, its stability and capacity far outstrip current magnetic or optical solutions like hard drives or Blu-rays.

One fascinating feature is that these disks are immune to electromagnetic interference and unaffected by moisture or radiation. That makes them ideal for storing critical archives-such as historical documents, cultural treasures, or space mission data.

In fact, the technology was famously used to record major human achievements like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Magna Carta on a single glass disk, designed to last beyond the end of human civilization.

From a scientific standpoint, the use of femtosecond lasers allows for extreme precision without damaging surrounding material. The energy is delivered so quickly that it alters the atomic structure of the glass without heating the bulk of it, enabling permanent and highly localized changes.

While commercial applications are still in development, the implications are profound. As data generation continues to grow exponentially, finding sustainable and reliable storage solutions becomes increasingly important. 5D glass disks could be the answer for future-proofing humanity's knowledge.
