Manhole covers are an everyday element of urban infrastructure, often ignored by passersby. Yet, they hold a peculiar design secret that has fascinated engineers and curious minds alike: they are almost always round. But why? What is so special about the circular shape that it has become the global standard for manhole covers?

The most fundamental reason is that a round cover cannot fall through its own opening. If you imagine a square or rectangular manhole cover being turned diagonally, it could potentially slip through the hole, posing a serious safety hazard. A round cover, on the other hand, has the same diameter all around, so it fits securely over the opening without the risk of dropping inside.
Beyond safety, circular covers are easier to handle. They can be rolled along the ground, which is a significant advantage given that manhole covers typically weigh between 90 and 150 kilograms. Lifting and rotating a heavy object is far easier when it can be rolled instead of dragged or carried awkwardly.
Manufacturing and installation also play a role. A round manhole cover can be placed on a manhole in any orientation, eliminating the need for precise alignment. This simplicity speeds up installation and reduces human error. Additionally, round shapes are easier to cast and mold in iron foundries due to the uniformity of pressure during the cooling process.
From a structural standpoint, round manholes are stronger. The circular design evenly distributes the weight of traffic passing over them, reducing stress points. In engineering terms, circles are inherently strong under compression, which is why they’re also used in arches and domes. This makes them ideal for areas subjected to the constant pressure of road vehicles.
Historically, the use of round shapes dates back to ancient times. Romans built round stone covers for their sewers for the same practical reasons. The design persisted through the ages, proving its long-term effectiveness in urban planning and civil engineering.
There’s even a mathematical angle. In geometry, the circle is the only shape with constant width, meaning it provides a perfect balance of material efficiency and load distribution. Any other polygonal shape would have varying diameters and stress concentrations at the corners.
In some rare cases, non-circular covers are used—such as rectangular ones for utility vaults or triangular ones for telecommunications. These shapes are chosen to distinguish the type of infrastructure or due to specific space constraints. However, the round manhole cover remains the safest and most efficient design overall.
