Why Are There Worms Inside Some Hazelnuts - And Can You Still Eat Them?

If you've ever cracked open a hazelnut only to find a tiny, wriggling larva or the remains of one inside, you're not alone. This is a surprisingly common phenomenon and it has a scientific explanation rooted in the life cycles of certain insects, particularly the hazelnut weevil (Curculio nucum), a small beetle native to Europe and parts of Asia.

The hazelnut weevil lays its eggs inside young hazelnuts in early summer. The female uses her curved snout to bore a tiny hole into the shell and deposit a single egg. Once the egg hatches, the larva feeds on the nut's kernel, hollowing it out from the inside. This feeding process continues for several weeks, during which the larva grows significantly in size. By late summer or early autumn, the mature larva exits the nut and burrows into the soil, where it will pupate and eventually emerge as an adult beetle in the following year.

While it may be unsettling to find a larva inside a hazelnut, this does not necessarily mean the nut is harmful to eat-at least from a toxicological perspective. The main concern is not health, but quality. A nut that has hosted a larva is typically hollowed out, bitter, and structurally compromised. However, the larva itself is not dangerous if accidentally consumed; in fact, insects are a common source of protein in many cultures.

That said, eating wormy hazelnuts is generally not recommended. Even though the larva is not poisonous, the damaged nut may be moldy, rancid, or simply unpleasant to eat. In addition, the presence of larvae indicates a lack of proper storage or processing. Commercial hazelnut growers use methods like freezing, pasteurization, or careful sorting to minimize the risk of infested nuts reaching consumers.

Interestingly, the life cycle of the hazelnut weevil is closely tied to the phenology of the hazel tree. Studies have shown that climate change may be shifting the timing of weevil egg-laying, which can either increase or reduce infestation rates depending on how well the insect's schedule matches the development of the nuts.

There are other insects, such as the filbertworm (Cydia latiferreana), more common in North America, that can also infest hazelnuts in a similar fashion. These moths lay eggs on the surface of the nuts, and the larvae chew their way inside after hatching. The result is the same: damaged, often inedible nuts.

If you harvest hazelnuts yourself, one effective way to check for infestation is to place the nuts in water. Infested nuts often float due to internal damage and can be separated easily. Roasting nuts can also kill any remaining larvae, but it won't fix the flavor or texture of a nut that's already been eaten from the inside out.

In a broader context, this issue highlights the fascinating interplay between plants and insects. What appears to be a simple food defect is actually the result of a finely tuned ecological relationship that has evolved over millennia. Insects like the hazelnut weevil are not just pests-they are part of a complex natural system, one that responds dynamically to environmental conditions and human agricultural practices.

So the next time you find a "worm" in your hazelnut, remember: it's not a horror story, but a small glimpse into the intricate world of nature's cycles.
