Because of this, the airflow separates later and creates a smaller wake-or region of low pressure-behind the ball. When the ball spins, the airflow over the top of the ball moves faster than the airflow beneath it, thanks to the Magnus effect. This difference in speed creates a pressure difference that lifts the ball into the air, allowing it to travel farther. The dimples enhance this effect by maintaining stable airflow patterns.

Interestingly, the science of golf ball dimples is so well-developed that even the number, depth, and pattern of the dimples are carefully designed and tested. This observation led to the intentional design of dimpled balls, and since then, their aerodynamics have been a subject of extensive research and innovation.
